No it’s not a cauldron of female body parts, it’s a vibey folk-funk band with a new sound. Betty Stew is a convergence of styles with shades of rock, alt pop and even country at times. The quality musicianship of the quartet combined with simple catchy songs wraps the listener in a rich weave of melody and groove.

A true tailor of tunes, songstress Jeannette Dupuis provides the band with a never-ending supply of soulful hooky songs. She sings in a unique warm contralto voice, with a potent mixture of vulnerability and defiance. Lead guitarist David Dupuis adds quirky melodic guitar riffs that compel the listener and stick in the brain. Jeannette and David’s musical influences are as varied as the countries they grew up in, from Senegal to Malaysia, Denmark and South Africa.

Andy Delph ‘the oracle’ is a genius with the bass. Years of jamming and professional playing are apparent as he immediately channels the best groove for a song. And last, but incredibly notable, is Jody Brumell, the backbone of the band. His effortless drumming, the sticks and pedals extensions of his arms and legs, is riveting. Jody has toured Europe, Egypt and the United States with a variety of bands. One of the best rock drummers of our time, playing in Betty Stew truly displays his versatility.

All of the band members have played in other projects and are blown away by the natural magic they make together. If synchronicity wasn’t already taken, it would be an apt title for the CD they’re currently recording with Porcelain records. Keep your ear to the ground – you’ll be hearing more of Betty Stew.
